Discussion on Merits of Increasing Select Board from Three to Five Members at CPL

Discussion on Merits of Increasing Select Board from Three to Five Members

On Wednesday, November 20th, 6-7:30 pm at the Craftsbury Public Library, interested citizens will meet to discuss the possibilities, pros and cons of increasing the Craftsbury Select Board from three members to five.

It’s hard not to notice the huge workload the current three members carry. With increasing mandatory regulations plus interest in and desire for state/federal funds and other programs, it seems time to consider whether that weight should be shared by more people. (Board members also eventually retire so we should look ahead!)

Meeting begins at 6pm and will go no later than 7:30pm. Current Select Board members are part of this discussion and will be here to help.

We expect to discuss:

  • Workload challenges of three select board members with current duties

  • What works well, what doesn’t

  • Pros and cons of changing the number of members (spread the work? make compliance easier? make serving on the board more attractive? make decisions harder? easier?)

  • Understand Vermont statutes regarding town governance, and options towns and citizens have in choosing number of select board members

  • Discuss any next steps, and who will do what

This is an important discussion for our town

– all citizens are encouraged to participate!
