Hosmer Pond Watershed Initiative

The Hosmer Ponds Watershed Initiative is being launched by a group of Craftsbury and Albany landowners and residents who value the cultural and natural landscape of the Hosmers region of Craftsbury and Albany. We are seeking to include everyone who feels they have a stake in the health and future of the Hosmer Ponds area, by organizing educational and social events to get people together to learn more about their surroundings and talk about what they value. This spring and summer we are gathering information about water quality and the richness of habitat, recreational opportunities and history in the area and inviting the community to seminars, field walks and gatherings designed to share this information. In the future, based on these gatherings and community discussions, we hope to engage community members in more thinking about long term conservation goals for the region and what tools are available to reach such conservation goals.

The Hosmer Ponds Watershed Initiative is being supported by Vermont Land Trust(VLT). Vermont Land Trust is a non-profit land conservation organization interested in supporting community conversations about land and stewardship. Ananonymous donor created a small fund allowing VLT to support this type of work, led by local residents, around Little and Great Hosmer Ponds. Local residents are volunteering to gather information and conduct outreach efforts, however, the VLT funds are underwriting some of the information gathering and outreach work over the next several years (e.g., mailings, maps, outreach forums, etc.). The VLT also has funds available for implementation of conservation measures, including conservation easements and riparian protection, in the area.
